Triple Eight Race Engineering continues its dominance in 2021 with van Gisbergen claiming two-from-two at Mount Panorama
Jamie Whincup - Car #88
“Today’s race was pretty straight forward, but it was pretty crazy at the start. Wes (McDougall, Race Engineer) said “pit with option” at lap three, but I decided to stay out because the longer you can leave it, the better chance you have later in the race, so I was risking double stacking lap after lap, and then at lap eight, I thought it was time to come in. I felt like I was spinning ‘red’ at the casino, and I’d won four or five times, but you know it’s not going to keep rolling your way. As it turned out, there was massive confusion going over the radio, which was pretty hairy, but we didn’t double stack which was good, and we ran our race. I think our pace was around the mark, and unfortunately Davo (Will Davison) made a small mistake at the end which got us another spot, but after our qualifying today, I’ll take that result. It was a good first weekend with Wes. We have a lot to learn, and we looked a bit ordinary compared to #97, but sometimes that’s the way it goes. We’ll work harder and try to run with those guys for the rest of the year.”
Shane van Gisbergen - Car #97
“The way this weekend went was awesome. The team has been so good, working with (David) Cauchi (Race Engineer) has been awesome and his strategies have been even better. The atmosphere in the whole team is really good. As I touched on yesterday, I was really frustrated with myself on Friday for making a few mistakes, but yesterday we rectified that, and today the car was awesome – much better in qualifying and in the race the balance was much better. It’s frustrating to race in pit lane, but the middle stint for us was awesome knowing I had to make a gap, but I’d rather have won the race by passing Cam (Waters) on the track. Overall, the car was magnificent, the strategy was on point, and it’s bloody good to leave Bathurst with two wins.”
